Seeing Double

There is a reason you have two eyes. They work together to help you see where something really is. This is called convergence. Try this simple experiment with your eyes to find out what happens when you only use one eye at a time.

Materials Needed:

Pencil

Procedure

  1.  Hold the pencil straight out about a foot away from your face.
  2. Close one eye.
  3. Now open that eye and close your other eye. Did the pencil seem to move?
  4. Now open up both eyes and focus on the pencil.

What Happened?

When you have both eyes open the pencil should be in the middle of the two spots you saw with just one eye open. The pencil is actually in the middle where both eyes together see it. It is not to the left or to the right which is where you see it when you are only using one eye.  This is why having two eyes helps you to see where something actually is.
