Chlorine, In the Swimming Pool or Your Body
Ever wonder why your hair can turn greenish when you spend
a lot of time in the pool? To bid a final farewell to summer, here
is an experiment about chlorine water and you!
Materials Needed:
- Swimming pool
- Chlorine Tester
- Two small cups that are the same size.
Procedure
- Take two cups of water from a chlorinated swimming pool. Make
sure to take the water from the exact same area of the pool so that the
chlorine content will be the same.
- Be sure you have the same amount of water in each of the cups. No more
than 6 ounces of water.
- Label the cups, A and B.
- Test cup A with your chlorine tester. (Follow the directions that
come with your tester) Be sure NOT to touch the water
- Put your finger into cup B and let it sit in the water for one full
minute.
- Take out your finger and test the water in cup B with your chlorine
tester.
What Happened?
Some of the chlorine in cup B was absorbed right into your body
through your skin. This will make the chlorine test for cup B have less chlorine
than cup A. Definitely shows how important it is to take a shower and wash the chlorine
out of your hair every time you swim.
