Chlorine, In the Swimming Pool or Your Body

Ever wonder why your hair can turn greenish when you spend a lot of time in the pool?  To bid a final farewell to summer, here is an experiment about chlorine water and you!

Materials Needed:

  1. Swimming pool
  2. Chlorine Tester
  3. Two small cups that are the same size.

Procedure

  1.  Take  two cups of water from a chlorinated swimming pool. Make sure to take the water from the exact same area of the pool so that the chlorine content will be the same.
  2. Be sure you have the same amount of water in each of the cups. No more than 6 ounces of water.
  3. Label the cups, A and B.
  4. Test cup A  with your chlorine tester. (Follow the directions that come with your tester) Be sure NOT to touch the water
  5. Put your finger into cup B and let it sit in the water for one full minute.
  6. Take out your finger and test the water in cup B with your chlorine tester.

What Happened?

Some of the chlorine in cup B was absorbed right into your body through your skin. This will make the chlorine test for cup B have less chlorine than cup A. Definitely shows how important it is to take a shower and wash the chlorine out of your hair every time you swim.
