Your eye is a magical organ that allows us to see the world. There are
several different parts to your eye. The part of your eye that is
colored green, blue, brown, black or hazel is called the iris. Right in
the middle of the iris is a hole. This hole looks like a black circle
and it is called the pupil. It is protected by a clear layer called the
cornea. Behind the pupil is a lens.
In order to for see light enters your eye and goes
through the cornea, the pupil and the lens. The image appears
upside-down on the very back part of the eye which is called the
retina.
The retina has millions and millions of tiny cells
called cones. These cones are able to tell us about all the different
colors that we see. Another type of cell, called rods, tell us about
black and white things that we see.
Using the optic nerve the receptor cells send messages
to the brain. There is a blind spot on the retina where the nerves leave
the eye because there are no rods or cones there.
