On top of your head you have approximately 100,000 hairs. Your hair is made from keratin. At the tip of every single one of your hairs is a root. The root is attached to a follicle which is inside your skin. The follicle shape determines what type of hair you have. Take a look at the graphics below and you can see that a round follicle creates straight hair. An oval follicle makes wavy hair and a curly shaft of hair comes from a flat follicle.
