Skeletons: Just the Bare Bone Facts

When you were born your bones were like rubber.

Can you imagine what it would be like if they were still like rubber? Your leg bones would not be able to support you. As a newborn baby even if you knew how to stand up  you wouldn't be able to.

But as you grew, something changed. Calcium and other minerals from your food started collecting in your bones in order for them to harden. This is why it is so important to eat healthy while your bones are growing! As you approached your first birthday your bones became strong enough to support your body without bending.

Did you know that your skeleton is also a storage bin?

Lots of different minerals are stored in the bone. If you do not get all of the minerals you need from your diet your body takes the minerals from your bones.

Are your bones solid?

No, and if they were they would be as heavy as rocks! Inside of your bone is a spongy material called marrow. A special red bone marrow is inside of your skull, back bone and breast bone. These bones are pretty busy too because the red bone marrow produces the red blood cells  that go into your blood stream. Every second they make two and a half million red blood cells.
