Florence
Nightingale was born into a wealthy Victorian family in Florence, Italy on May
12th, 1820. From early on Florence had a great desire to enter the medical
field. She met Elizabeth Blackwell, The first women doctor in the United States,
which only made her desire greater.
In 1854 the Crimean War began and Florence volunteered to
take 38 women to Turkey. While she was there she cared for all the wounded
solders. She was appalled by the unsanitary conditions in the war hospitals in
Turkey and set out to reform all the English military hospitals.
She then wrote two books on nursing and was able to raise enough money to begin reforming the standards in hospitals in England. Later she went on to write two more books which included her strong opinions on women's rights.
