How to Find Out If Taste and Smell Are Connected

Try this fun experiment on a friend!

Difficulty Level: easy     Time Required: Twenty Minutes

Here's How:

  1. You will need a friend, four paper cups that are the same shape and size, three different types of juice, water,  a scarf or blindfold,
  2. Fill up each cup with a different type of juice and one cup of water. Make sure your friend does not see the juices before the experiment.
  3. Use the scarf to blindfold your friend.
  4. Tell your friend to hold his/her nose during the experiment.
  5. Hand one cup of juice to your friend and ask him to drink it and tell you what kind of juice it is.
  6. When he is done give him some water to wash out the juice taste.
  7. Repeat both steps five and six with the other two juices.
  8. Finally repeat the entire experiment without holding the nose.

Tips:

  1. Did you stump your friend? You should have because the senses of smell and taste are indeed linked.
  2. This experiment works because when juices are not smelled they all tend to taste similar, which makes them harder to recognize.
