How to Perform the Heimlich Maneuver on a Child

Be prepared for an emergency! Read this quick how to for a child over one year old. 

Difficulty Level: medium    Time Required: five minutes


Here's How:

  1. If the child is choking and conscious, either standing or sitting 
  2. Reach around the child's waist from behind. Place your fist with your thumb down against the abdomen.
  3. Make sure it is below the ribcage but above the navel.
  4. Grab your fist with your other hand and do five very quick thrusts upward to the abdomen. 
  5. Repeat this until the object comes out or the child loses consciousness
  6. When there is a loss of consciousness, place the child on his back and kneel down beside them. 
  7. Straddle yourself over their hips.
  8. Place the heel of your hand over the abdomen below the breastbone and above the navel. Put your other hand over your fist. 
  9. Give five very quick thrusts with both hands. 
  10. Look for the object but only try to  remove it if you can see it
  11. If the airway is still blocked you will need to begin CPR.
  12. Keep repeating steps 8-11 until the object is removed or the child starts to breathe on his own. 

Tips:

  1. Always make sure someone has called 911 in case of a choking emergency.
