Make Your Own Fog

Respiration occurs every time we breath out. You can collect one of the gases on a mirror and watch this biochemical reaction in progress.

Materials Needed:

Small cloth or towel
Mirror

Procedure

  1.  Make sure your mirror is dry and clean.
  2. Hold the mirror close to your mouth, but do not touch it.
  3. Take in a deep breath and exhale onto the mirror.
  4. Look at the surface of the mirror. What do you see?

What Happened?

Fog is collected on the surface of the mirror.

Why

When respiration occurs a chemical reaction has taken place in your body. Oxygen is taken into your body when you breathe in. It combines with glucose to produce energy. Two things that your body does not need are also produced. These are called waste products. The two waste products formed are carbon dioxide and water vapor. Water vapor is water in a gas form. When the warm water vapor is exhaled out it touches the cool mirror and turns into a liquid.

Here is the chemical equation

O2 + glucose  --------->  CO2 + H2O + energy

Oxygen + glucose ---------> Carbon dioxide + Water + energy
